Uncensored asks: So what indie comics should I be reading?

I got thinking recently, about what I consider to be the best comic-based films ever (I’ll likely post my thoughts about that later on), and high rankers on this list are Ghost World, Road To Perdition, and Sin City. What do all of these comic-based films have in common? For starters, their creators had a lot of involvement in them (the former two having the screenplays written by the graphic novel writers, and the latter being co-directed by), but more importantly, they’re all independent comics (Dark Horse is considered an indie-publisher still), and they’re all fantastic films.

So I got to wondering, if I hold these three films based on indie-comics in such high regard (as well as their source material), then why is my pull list made up almost entirely of titles from the Big Two? What I ask is, to recommend great indie comics to me (nothing from Marvel or DC, though Vertigo I might consider), tell me about them, what’s great about them, and why you love them, and I promise you I’ll seek out and buy at least two of the books recommended to me next week, and subsequently review them.

Uncensored’s note: Just so you don’t recommend anything I already read, these are the following non-Big Two titles on my pull list:
Battle Pope (Image)
Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty (IDW)
The Walking Dead (Image)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Dark Horse) [upcoming]
Beast Wars (IDW) [upcoming]
Cyberforce (Image/Top Cow) [upcoming]

Sad, isn’t it? This is why I’m asking for help. I want some indie, intelligent reads.

Black Hole by Charles Burns. Psychosexual horror, subtle and disturbing. It'll mess with your head but good.

Stray Bullets by David Lapham. Great crime comics.

Banana Sunday has a funny story by Root Nibot and has Colleen Coover drawing cute girls and talking monkeys. Funny Talking Monkeys! Go-Go the Gorilla will be your new hero.

Queen & Country by Greg Rucka and various artists. Best realistic espionage comic ever. (And don't miss the two that led into the series: Whiteout & Whiteout: Melt, with art by Steve Lieber.)

Thanks for the recomendations, Queen & Country sounds like something I'll definately check out. The next arc doesn't begin however until March's #29.

I should've stated that I wanted to check out individual issues first before leaping into buying graphic novels of said titles. It's a financial thing, unfortunately.

Stray Bullets also seems rather interesting given a review I just read of issue #40, if my comic shop still has a copy, I'll pick it up for sure.

More recomendations!

do Desolation Jones and/or Fell count :)

also (off the top of my head) - Elk's Run, Giant Monster (2 bumper editions), The Last of the Independents (TP), Brodie's Law (TB), Street Angel (TP).

For a second i was into Shaolin Cowboy. After a stellar #1 and 2 i got turned off by #3 and (unfortunately?) never looked back... maybe i should check in on that again...

For grins def check out Hero@Large (if you can find it) and PvP for when you're on the can :)

For pure cool - Amazing Joy Buzzards (although it's Image so not completely indie).

For superhero stuff - Godland or Invincible.

Sci-fi - Fear Agent.

Anything with "Scott Pilgrim" in the title or so I'm told. I haven't gotten them yet either.

Tricked from Top Shelf Productions. Just finished it and it was good.

Go for something less action/western/horror/sci-fi-ish type comics and more, I don't know....indy. Optic Nerve is good. Black Hole is good. Just go to the indy section and pick up something new and strange.

In no particular order:

Criminal, The Goon, Daredevil, Exterminators, Punisher, Hellboy/B.P.R.D (All), Powers, Godland, Usagi Yojimbo, The Walking Dead, Invincible, Conan, Ex Machina, DMZ, Desolation Jones, Fell, 100 Bullets, All-Star Superman, Ultimates 2, Loveless, and Fear Agent.

I'm recently back reading after a 15 year comics hiatus.

Zilla is not my real name.

I'm from Tejas living in VA. I'm married w/ 2 dogs. I'm an IT security consultant cranking the wheel for a big consulting firm in "real" life.

I watch the History Channel, Nat'l Geo, TLC, Mil Channel, ESPN and NFL Network, CourtTV (forensic files, etc.) and the Cartoon Network (love Genndy T's Samurai Jack and Clone Wars Adventures). My taste in movies: Gladiator, Last Samurai, Braveheart, Godfather, Tarantino (whatever), Kung-Fu (whatever), Westerns, Top Gun, Big Lebowski.

I love the outdoors and bs'ing around w/ my dogs.

In addition to being a comics junkie, i'm also a sports junkie especially when it comes to the Texas Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys.
